What is a Skin Patch Test?
A patch test is a specialist diagnostic procedure used to identify delayed allergic reactions, known as contact allergies, which are triggered by substances that come into direct contact with the skin. Unlike the skin prick test, which detects immediate allergic responses, the patch test is designed to uncover reactions that develop slowly over 48 to 72 hours.
It is the gold standard for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis - a condition where the immune system mounts a delayed reaction to a specific chemical, metal, fragrance, or material. At Kigali Dermatology Center, patch testing is conducted and interpreted by dermatologists with specialist training in international allergology.
How does Skin Patch Test works
The patch test is carried out over several days and usually involves two to three clinic visits. On the first day, small adhesive patches containing common allergens are applied to the upper back and must be kept dry. After about 48 hours, the patches are removed and an initial reading is taken to check for early reactions.
A final assessment is then done one to two days later, where any positive reactions, such as redness, swelling, or blistering are identified, and the dermatologist explains the results and recommended next steps.
