What is Cryosurgery?

Cryosurgery, also known as cryotherapy, is a quick and minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat a variety of common skin conditions. It involves the application of extreme cold to intentionally destroy abnormal or diseased tissue.
At Kigali Dermatology Center, our dermatologists frequently use this highly effective method to safely remove benign growths like warts, skin tags, and seborrheic keratoses, as well as precancerous spots. It is a precise technique that targets the problem area while protecting the surrounding healthy skin.

How does Cryosurgery work?

During the brief procedure, the dermatologist carefully applies liquid nitrogen directly to the targeted lesion using a specialized medical spray device or a cotton swab. The extreme cold instantly freezes the cells, which destroys the unwanted tissue. You may feel a brief stinging or cold sensation during the quick application.

After the treatment, the area may become red and form a small blister as it heals. Over the next few days to weeks, the treated lesion will naturally dry up, scab over, and fall off, allowing fresh and healthy skin to emerge.
