What is Tinea Capitis?
Tinea capitis is a fungal infection that specifically targets the scalp and the hair follicles. Often referred to as scalp ringworm, it is most frequently seen in children but can affect individuals of any age. This condition is highly contagious and typically presents as intensely itchy, red, and scaly patches on the scalp.
It often causes the hair in the affected areas to become brittle and break off, leading to temporary bald spots. At Kigali Dermatology Center, we provide expert evaluation to quickly identify the infection and prevent it from spreading further.
How does Tinea Capitis treatment work?
Because the fungus settles deep within the hair follicles, topical creams applied to the surface of the skin are usually not enough to clear the condition. Our board-certified dermatologists will typically prescribe a course of oral antifungal medication to effectively fight the infection from the inside out.
To support the oral medication and reduce the risk of spreading the fungus to others, we often recommend pairing it with a specialized medicated shampoo. The treatment process requires patience and usually takes a few weeks, during which we will closely monitor the scalp to ensure a full recovery and encourage healthy hair regrowth.
